Former Secretary of State [to Richard Nixon] Henry Kissinger has to this day a reasonably high profile in the US. There are still those who are prepared to listen to him even if he fears travelling to some countries lest he be arrested as a war criminal. Just read Christopher Hitchins book on Kissinger to see a damning portrait of the man.
It's perhaps hardly surprising that Kissinger is an advisor to George Bush. That has to be a worry given some of the revelations about Kissinger in a new book on Nixon and Kissinger by Robert Dallek.
Dallek writes:
"Put it all together and an intimate picture emerges of the complex relationship between Nixon and Kissinger, men who were allies but also rivals—paranoid and insecure, deceitful and manipulative, ruthless and strangely vulnerable."
This has to be most troubling if the personna of Kissinger is correctly described. It also reflects itself in the way George Bush acts - if one can describe it as that. Read an extract from the new book in Vanity Fair here.
