Terrorism and Terrorists: Why?

In the glib quick sound-bite world of George Bush and others like him, the latest incident of attempted terrorism of planes is simple. They are out to destroy liberty and freedom! If only it were so straight-forward!

As thinking people ponder what has, yet again, caused young people to want to engage in wholesale destruction of human lives and general devastation, John Tirman, Executive Director of MIT's Centre for International Studies, in this piece from AlterNet puts forward 10 pointers about the true nature of terrorism and its causes.

"What we now know about the London-based plot to destroy ten civilian airplanes points to six conclusions.

First, what stopped this plot was law enforcement. Law enforcement. Not a military invasion of Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, or Iraq. Old-fashioned surveillance, development of human sources, putting pieces together, and cooperation with foreign police and intelligence services."

The NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) goes on hold.....because of one non-Treaty member (Israel)

Isn't there something radically wrong here? Israel, a non-signatory to the NPT has, evidently, been the cause for those countries that are Treaty members, notably Canada, the US and the UK, after 4 weeks of negotiation, effectively blocking off any meaningful progress in ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas stopped him and two friends, found some marijuana, searched put Carter, then put him handcuffed behind his back into their patrol car, where they say he shot himself in the head with a gun they failed to find. The FBI is investigating. Police Chief Michael Yates, who stands behind his officers' story, says in an interview that the death is "definitely bizarre and defies logic at first glance." You think?
