It is always difficult from afar to gauge the mood of a country.
To read various reports coming out of the USA the George Bush trust-factor is on the wane. Whilst many in America accuse the New York Times of being part of the "liberal" press - whatever that might mean given that anything even slightly to "to the left" is likely to be called socialist! - today's Editorial in the NYT [here] presumably reflects reasonably widespread thinking in the USA.
In some respects the "trust gap" referred to in the USA should be applied with equal force to Australia's political leaders - although they have not really been under challenge or pressure like their counterparts in America.
