"Every year an estimated 8 million children -- about 6 percent of total births worldwide -- are born with a serious birth defect of genetic or partially genetic origin, according to a new report from the March of Dimes".
It's a staggering and troubling figure - as reported in what is described as the first Report of its kind, by the March of Dimes.
Of even greater concern still is that steps could be undertaken to alleviate the problem - and that the cost of "rectifying" the defects does not impact on the economies of even poor countries.
