The ABC has announced, with no warning, the axing of The Glass House from the end of this year. It all smacks of interference from up top. The program takes aim at everyone, notably politicians. It's certainly irreverent. Questions have been asked in Federal Parliament and this week at the Senate Estimates Committee sessions.
Debi Enker, of The Age Green Guide, makes the salient points:
"The problem with this decision, apart from killing off a popular program that the ABC has successfully nurtured, is that it sends out all the wrong messages. It suggests a national broadcaster that is cowed and defensive, an organisation inclined to play it safe.
That's worrying because what we need, and what we would hope as taxpayers to be financing, is an ABC that's spirited and robust, that's not afraid to take on the sacred cows, and feels some responsibility to do so in its satire."
