Attorney-General Ruddock has, rightly, been the subject of severe condemnation. His actions on a variety of levels, notably the lack of dealing with David Hicks in a manner which the first law officer in the land ought have, leaves Ruddock exposed as a disgrace.
The United States A-G isn't "travelling" any better! The one difference is that The NY Times [reproduced in the IHT] unlike any of the media in Australia - has taken a stick to the A-G Gonzales in its editorial.
"During the hearing on his nomination as attorney general, Alberto Gonzales said he understood the difference between the job he held — President George W. Bush's in-house lawyer — and the job he wanted, which was to represent all Americans as their chief law enforcement officer and a key defender of the Constitution. Two years later, it is obvious Gonzales does not have a clue about the difference."
