The Government's concerns about migrants, their English skills and commitment are spurious, writes Petro Georgiou.
"The social justice constantly proclaimed by Menzies as one of the Liberal Party's cornerstones has been forgotten by many members of the party, and has been reviled by others.
Our traditions of civil liberty have been curtailed, and in some cases overturned, in pursuit of a war on terrorism."
The basis for the op-piece is the Government's drive to have migrants pass an English-speaking test. As Georgiou writes:
"I have looked closely at the Federal Government's discussion paper, Australian Citizenship: much more than just a ceremony, and I can find no detailed, robust analysis of a problem, and no evidence of how the new measures would resolve a problem that has not been demonstrated."
Georgiou is a Federal Liberal MP. He might be a lone voice but he deserves to be heard and read - as here in his op-ed piece in The Age.
Yet again Howard & Co stand condemned for their attitude and approach to immigrants, Muslims, those who don't share the Liberal Party philosophy, etc. etc.
