Making a difference for the environment

Most of the aid agencies or groups working to save the environment - and because of their high profile inevitably attract attention and media coverage - are the likes of GreenPeace, Oxfam, Care or Medicin Sans Frontier. But there are many smaller organisations out there doing valuable work without any fanfare associated with it. They are as much deserving of support as the bigger organisations and groups - with all their infrastructure and overhead costs.

One such organisation making a difference to and for the environment in Indonesia is Friends of the National Parks Foundation.

The winner of quite a number of awards over the years, FNPF describes the work it does on its website as this:

"FNPF believe that working in just one area is not enough. We take a holistic, balanced and comprehensive approach which recognizes the intrinsic inter-relatedness of human beings, our fellow creatures and the environment.

As a small active Non Government Organisation we focus on grassroots issues and frontline conservation.

We work in cooperation with many groups and individuals including researchers, local communities, government, customary and cultural groups, international volunteers and the global conservation community."

The NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) goes on hold.....because of one non-Treaty member (Israel)

Isn't there something radically wrong here? Israel, a non-signatory to the NPT has, evidently, been the cause for those countries that are Treaty members, notably Canada, the US and the UK, after 4 weeks of negotiation, effectively blocking off any meaningful progress in ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. No comment called for in this piece from CommonDreams: Another young black man: The strange sad case of 21-year-old Chavis Carter. Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas stopped him and two friends, found some marijuana, searched put Carter, then put him handcuffed behind his back into their patrol car, where they say he shot himself in the head with a gun they failed to find. The FBI is investigating. Police Chief Michael Yates, who stands behind his officers' story, says in an interview that the death is "definitely bizarre and defies logic at first glance." You think?
