PM Tony Blair has, finally, announced that he will step down as British PM on 27 June next. Now, acres of newsprint will be devoted to trying to assess whether his 10 years in office were a triumph or a failure. Opinions will doubtlessly be divided but probably Blair will most be remembered for his unequivocal and unquestioning support for George Bush in going into what is now the fiasco of the Iraq War - 4 years on and no real end in sight.
The NY Times today had a none-too-flattering op-ed piece, obviously from an American perspective, written before Blair made his announcement:
"A little over a decade after he came in as the young hope of a New Britain, Tony Blair, who is expected to announce his resignation date today, is a figure vilified and loathed by his own party and disliked by people in Britain at large."
