The other day reading a piece about the brilliant historian Tony Judt - now, all too sadly suffering with ALS - he made reference to some staggering figures which bear remembering:
In 1945, Europe lay in ruins. Some 36.5 million of its inhabitants had died between 1939 and 1945. Most of those who survived were starving or without shelter: Germany had lost 40% of its homes. Britain 30%, France 20%.
