It has often been said that had decent Germans spoken up in the 1930's the world might have avoided WW2 and the devastating Holocaust. Yes, to speak out takes courage and often brickbats from those aligned to the majority view. It's also a thin line to hold the line. Witness "First they came…" the poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.
The fact that so many Jewish organisations around the globe - notably AIPAC in the US, the Board of Deputies in the UK and the ECAJ and AIJAC in Australia - have given wholesale endorsement to Israel's actions in Gaza, makes them complicit in Israel's totally inhuman treatment, on all levels, of the people of Gaza. Of course, those who by their silence say or do nothing are equally complicit.
Thankfully, there are numerous Jews around the world, both organised into groups - think JStreet in the USA, IJV in the UK and IAJV in Australia - or individually, who are speaking out to protest both Israel's actions and condemn Jewish communal leaders who have endorsed and supported Israel in what it is doing.
