Lawyer, commentator and editor of the Justinian, Richard Ackland writing his regular op-ed piece in the SMH lists at least 10 incidents of intrusions into civil liberties in Australia in 2007:
"Over the past 12 months there was an impressive list of civil liberties violations in our relaxed and comfortable land. A year ago we published a list showing how our liberties had been whittled, starting with the sedition laws and ending with David Hicks. Now there is a fresh outcrop of abrasions to our rights, although, sadly, there is an eerie consistency about some of the players."
The list, here, does not make for happy reading. Will things get better under the new Rudd Government? Hard to say at this stage but one would be tempted not to hold one's breath. Watch this space......
