How to whip up an [appalling] frenzy!

In his inimitable style and with more than a degree of tongue in cheek, Mike Carlton , writing his weekly column in the SMH, highlights the way the so-called threat from Muslims has been beaten up [no other word for it!]:

"Not nearly enough is being done to alert us to the danger of the Muslims in our midst, the enemy within. Naively, too many real Australians refuse to recognise that the young woman in the hijab on the bus, or the mild-mannered Pakistani doctor at the country hospital emergency department, is almost certainly an al-Qaeda terrorist sleeper only awaiting the command to bring death and destruction down upon our peaceful, sea-girt home.

But some people are standing watch, like the geese that guarded Rome. At the Murdoch flagship newspaper, The Australian, not a day goes by without the alarm sounding. "Australian Islamist warning. Home-grown jihad threat," it honked across the front page last Monday. "Up to 3000 young Muslims in Sydney alone are at risk of becoming radicalised by fundamentalist Islam as community leaders warn that Australia has become a 'prime country' for hardliners pushing extremist ideologies."

By Tuesday, the threat had escalated, with the Oz shouting again that "about a dozen Muslim clerics have been identified as key hardliners preaching fundamentalist messages potentially influencing thousands of followers throughout Australia".

Not to be outdone, its stablemate, The Daily Telegraph, bored in with: "In the race for the hearts and minds of young Muslims, the fundamentalist fanatics are exploiting teenage angst to set up ideological sleeper cells of potential terrorists ready to be pushed over the brink."

Quivering with angst myself, I googled some Sydney Islamic websites to see what the evildoers are up to. The news was shocking, from both FAMSY, the Federation of Australian Muslim Students and Youth, and GIYC, the Global Islamic Youth Centre based in suburban Liverpool.

Only yesterday, the GIYC scheduled a "Boyz Will Be Boyz" evening, for Muslim children aged four to 12. A "fun and games night", said the ad, with a jumping castle, treasure hunt, quiz and giveaways.

And the horror doesn't stop there. Be warned that tomorrow there is to be a Muslim girls' swimming carnival at the Roselands Aquatic Centre, with competitions, novelty events and "fun in the pools, including a BBQ lunch".

Plainly, these homicidal extremists will stop at nothing to destroy our wonderful Aussie way of life."

John Howard, the racist he is, must be loving seeing Tampa II sail onto the horizon as an election looms. It's those Muslims and the threat from terrorists.......!!!!!

Robert Fisk's predictions for the Middle East in 2013

There is no gain-saying that Robert Fisk, fiercely independent and feisty to boot, is the veteran journalist and author covering the Middle East. Who doesn't he know or hasn't he met over the years in reporting from Beirut - where he lives?  In his latest op-ed piece for The Independent he lays out his predictions for the Middle East for 2013. Read the piece in full, here - well worthwhile - but an extract... "Never make predictions in the Middle East. My crystal ball broke long ago. But predicting the region has an honourable pedigree. “An Arab movement, newly-risen, is looming in the distance,” a French traveller to the Gulf and Baghdad wrote in 1883, “and a race hitherto downtrodden will presently claim its due place in the destinies of Islam.” A year earlier, a British diplomat in Jeddah confided that “it is within my knowledge... that the idea of freedom does at present agitate some minds even in Mecca...” So let’s say this for 2013: the “Arab Awakening” (the t...

The NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) goes on hold.....because of one non-Treaty member (Israel)

Isn't there something radically wrong here?    Israel, a non-signatory to the NPT has, evidently, been the cause for those countries that are Treaty members, notably Canada, the US and the UK, after 4 weeks of negotiation, effectively blocking off any meaningful progress in ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.    IPS reports ..... "After nearly four weeks of negotiations, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference ended in a predictable outcome: a text overwhelmingly reflecting the views and interests of the nuclear-armed states and some of their nuclear-dependent allies. “The process to develop the draft Review Conference outcome document was anti-democratic and nontransparent,” Ray Acheson, director, Reaching Critical Will, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), told IPS. “This Review Conference has demonstrated beyond any doubt that continuing to rely on the nuclear-armed states or their nuclear-de...

#1 Prize for a bizarre story.....and lying!

No comment called for in this piece from CommonDreams: Another young black man: The strange sad case of 21-year-old Chavis Carter. Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas  stopped  him and two friends, found some marijuana, searched put Carter, then put him handcuffed  behind his back  into their patrol car, where they say he  shot himself  in the head with a gun they failed to find. The FBI is investigating. Police Chief Michael Yates, who stands behind his officers' story,  says in an interview  that the death is "definitely bizarre and defies logic at first glance." You think?
