A couple of weeks ago a Report disclosed the appalling state of assistance available to those suffering some form of mental illness. The Federal Government's usual refrain was that it was a question of the funds available to be directed to what the Report clearly highlighted was an urgent need to remedy an ongoing problem.
Fast forward to yesterday. The Federal Government has acknowledged that it has spent at least $50 million dollars in promoting its new IR laws. Further, at a Senate inquiry the Department of Immigration disclosed that the cost of the facility on the Island of Nauru as part of the so-called Pacific Solution was $3 million per month.
So, here is an instant $86 million [taking a twelve month frame for the Nauru facility] immediately available to be directed to assisting the community in the sphere of mental health.
What bizarre priorities the Government has.....
